blog: How to open a CrossFit® gym

Opening a CrossFit® gym is pretty easy, all you need is:

First you have to verify the requirements for affiliation on the official CrossFit® homepage. You will need a Level 1 cert, money for the annual membership fees and a website. Thus, you need to take the following steps:

Step 1: Get a Level 1 Certificate

Resource cost: 2.5 days and 1000 US Dollars

You can look up the requirements on the official homepage. You will need to read through the participant handbook and the Level 1 training guide. No need to worry, the text is spaced like an eigth grader's homework, this will take 0.5 days (longer if you're a little slow).

After having read the incredibly detailed material, you have take the course and test. This will take 2 full days and 1000 US Dollars course fee.

Step 2: Write an essay...

... on how awesome CrossFit® is and how your table rises every time you think about it. As the official homepage states, "It doesn't have to be long or formal, but it should be from the heart", so this will take you another 0.5 days (longer if have a conscience).

Step 3: Set up a website

After you have been judged worthy of the name CrossFit®, you need to set up a homepage, it's part of the requirements. Having an acquaintance who is semi-savvy with bootstrap should be enough.

Step 4: Pay the annual membership fees

To cite the official homepage again, "As of Jan. 1, 2011, affiliation costs US$3,000 annually. Renewal fees are the same as your initial fees."

Step 5: Rent a warehouse and get equipment

A few rowers, a cheap rig, some cheap bushing bars and low-quality bumpers, medicine balls and wooden boxes ("plyoboxes") suffice.

You are now the owner of a CrossFit® gym and sufficiently knowledgeable to teach other people.

Post Scriptum

I am sure that there are CrossFit® boxes with knowledgeable trainers and coaches. The above only states the miminum requirements as of March 13, 2016. I encourage you to ask the coaches at your local box about their verifiable qualifications.
